Health programme against HCM, for CRX, DRX and GRX in RexUnited.
The Rex-breeds are in general healthy and sound breeds, but as in all
breeds, even they have some problems with hereditary diseases. In some
breeds one have discovered the genetic disease HCM (Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy)
The board of RexUnited has decided that we, as a Rex-club, will participate
with the cat-club
Maine-Coon katten in their programme against HCM. This is
a task/work that span for many years, together with all breeders within
each breed, to eliminte/minimize the problems.
In co-operation with cardiologist, Jens Häggström at
SLU (works at the university in Uppsala, Sweden), Maine Coon-katten
has formed recommendations for testing and breeding according to HCM.
RexUnited have decided to use recommmendations that differ, according
to the Main Coon cats.
Working with a health programme does not indicate that the rexes are,
in any way, more prune to diseases than other breeds or in any way that
they are affected by hereditary diseases in a wider perspective than other
breeds. With a goal, as this health programme has, information and soloutions
of how to deal with results, it aught to end that our breeds are more
healthy than other breeds, than the breeds were no one has dealt with
the problem.
This register is open for all to participate in, RexUnited
encourage all members to participate and conduct the recommendated examination
of their cats and make registration of both negative and positive results
poblic.
It is possible to require information from the register from

It has shown, that openness is a main factor when conducting a health
programme and realibility to accieve a good result. Lack of openness is
domed to speculations and roumours, with fact one immediately puts and
end to all kind off discussion and speculations and one is able to put
the energy to make a change.
The test results will be public via the databases at PawPeds, each tested
cat will have a link to the result
Aim:
* reduce the frequence of affected cats
* one suspects that the disease is hereditary
dominant, it has shown to be so in some breeds and this is what we hopefully
can determine to find out when results is collected
* try to figure out how many within
the population are affected
The goal has to be proportioned depending the severity to the problem.
Under no circumstances one can selective harder that more than 1/3 of
the cats are taken out of breeding, regarding one and the same problem.
If one makes too drastic geneloss within a breed, the result can be opposite
to the main goal and one may create more genetic diseases that is spread
withing the genepool, and this is not what we want.
Basics within a health programme is information, information and
again information!
